abstract

abstract there is a world-wide effort to reduce the amount of chemicals used in crop production by introducing modern biological and ecological methods. one possible alternative is allelopathy. a laboratory trial was carried out to investigate of alleopathic potential of angelica . in this study the effect of different concentrations of aqueous extract of angelica herb was investigated on seed germination percentage and rate of upland cress (lepidium sativum) and radish (raphanus sativus l.). the trial was carried out in completely randomized design with four replicates. seven treatments (aqueous extract including 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 100% and distilled water as a control treatment) were applied on upland cress seeds and five treatments (water extract including 30, 50, 70, 100% and distilled water as control) were applied on radish seeds. the results revealed that treatment of upland cress seeds with 50, 70 and 100% aqueous extract significantly decreased percent and rate of seed germination. in radish, treatment of seeds with 70 and 100% aqueous extract resulted in the least percent of seed germination and treatment of seeds with 50, 70 and 100% aqueous extract resulted in the least rate of seed germination. overall results showed that with increasing the applied extract concentration, seed germination percentage and rate significantly decreased.

Antitumour activity of Angelica archangelica leaf extract.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a leaf extract from A. archangelica on the growth of Crl mouse breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS The antiproliferative activity of the extract was measured by 3H-thymidine uptake in the Crl cells in vitro. Twenty mice were injected with the Crl cells, and 11 of them were fed A. archangelica leaf ex...

Antiproliferative effect of Angelica archangelica fruits.

The aim of this work was to study the antiproliferative effect of a tincture from fruits of Angelica archangelica and the active components using the human pancreas cancer cell line PANC-1 as a model. Significant dose-dependent antiproliferative activity was observed in the tincture with an EC50 value of 28.6 microg/ml. Strong antiproliferative activity resulted from the two most abundant furan...

Accumulation of essential oils in relation to root differentiation in Angelica archangelica L.

The accumulation of essential oils in Angelica archangelica subsp. archangelica roots at different developmental stages was investigated through histochemical and chemical analyses. Roots less than 1 mm in diameter showed a primary diarch structure and two primary secretory ducts in the pericycle. These ducts were ephemeral and probably became dysfunctional early on. Oil accumulation was observ...

Coumarins from Angelica lucida L.--antibacterial activities.

The first phytochemical investigation of the fruits of Angelica lucida has led to the isolation and characterization of five known coumarins (imperatorin, isoimperatorin, heraclenol, oxypeucedanin hydrate and heraclenin). All isolated compounds were identified by means of spectral and literature data. The extracts and the isolated constituents from A. lucida have been also evaluated for their a...

Evaluation of Antiseizure Activity of Essential Oil from Roots of Angelica archangelica Linn. in Mice

In the present study, the effect of essential oil of the root of Angelica archangelica Linn. was evaluated against electrically and chemically induced seizures. The seizures were induced in mice by maximal electroshock and pentylenetetrazol. The effect of essential oil of the root of Angelica archangelica on seizures was compared with standard anticonvulsant agents, phenytoin and diazepam. The ...

2D NMR spectroscopic analyses of archangelicin from the seeds of Angelica archangelica.

A total of six coumarins, bergapten (1), xanthotoxin (2), imperatorin (3), isoimperatorin (4), phellopterin (5) and archangelicin (6), have been isolated from an n-hexane extract of the seeds of Angelica archangelica. The results of comprehensive 2D NMR analyses of archangelicin are discussed.
